We built ours out of upholtery foam, made it the exact height so my little Fergus could get up on my chaise, and covered it with fabric that matches my living room.
Everyone loves his little steps, and I don't smash my toes on something else hard sticking out beside my couch! That was our biggest problem with the wood stuff, someone was always smashing a toe or bumping into it.
My cousin is a foam artist (does projects for the movies) and we are thinking of building some for my parents yorkie now.
