Canned chicken is not good because it likely has preservatives, too much salt and likely has nitrates and is highly process. None of that is good for your dog. Neither is instant white rice.
If you are going to cook for your dog instead of using the HIll's, please make sure that you find a recipe that meets the dogs nutritional needs. Your vet may be able to give you a home cooked version of the Hills.
If you plan to home cook for a once-in-a-while treat, try cooking some chicken breast (no bones) and some regular quaker oats. If you use 1/2 cup of chicken, then double the oats to 1 cup (1:2 ratio of meat to oats). If your dog likes veggies, you can add those plus some plain yogurt. Note: I say once-in-a-while because this is not a balanced diet...it is missing vitamins and most importantly calcium. So, this is for a TREAT not for the regular diet.
Hills is expensive but maybe your vet can give you the green light to change foods or you can ask for the home cooked. But, don't guess about what to feed or how to add necessary vitamins because you can harm your dog!
Good luck!
