The pit didn't show on the x-ray because it's an organic material, so it sort of blends in. Unless something is metal or plastic, it normally won't show up.
Might be time for a trash can that fits under the sink cabinet, or one with a lid. Clever little booger! Thank God that neither one of mine have figured out how to get into the trash!! Don't be too hard on your hubby, it was an accident and now you know that your little guy knows how to raid the garbage
