You'll see that mother will begin to nurse less when pups are between 4 and 5 weeks of age because pups are teething. Milk consistancy begins changing and pups should be introduced to food at the time teeth begin coming in. I usually let my mothers call the shots and she is usually willing to let them nurse sporadically on her until about 9 to 10 weeks. Take care as to not pull her off of them completely too soon. If nothing else let her sleep with them so they can empty her at night. This will eliminate the risk of her breasts filling with milk and bursting.
