We drove out to Washington state when we moved here from Michigan with Penny and her two feline "brothers". They all handled it much better than I thought they would-- Penny was a little trooper! She even got out in the middle of a blizzard in the Rockies to potty. =P

I'd just recommend stopping pretty frequently. We took breaks every 2-3 hours. I actually inputted the locations of rest areas along our route into my GPS so that we could know in advance how far it would be between them and therefore not force Penny to "hold it" longer than she ought to. We used a car harness for her-- a special belt that attached to the seat belt and then hooked to her harness.

If your dog ever suffers from motion sickness in the car (about 1/5 of dogs do!) you might want to look into getting some Cerenia tablets before you go. Penny had always had issues with motion sickness on long car rides, but now we've got meds available to prevent that.
