We went through this when Reggie was a puppy. His first grooming they had to shave all his hair down really short because he was so matted. I don't know if it is because he is 1/4 Lhasa or not but his hair is soft and wavy, not wiry so it matts easily. Our groomer told us not to use a brush because that made the soft hair worse but to use a comb. We had 2 metal dog combs. One is a regular comb and the other is a flea comb. I comb any matts out I see with the regular comb and then go back over his whole body with the flea comb because it is good at removing debris and loose dead hair. The other thing we find is that keeping his hair cut short just works better because he bites his legs and matts the hair up on them when it starts getting long there. So he gets clipped every 2 mos.
