I highly recommend a car seat if you don't already have one. The Snoozer brand (or Pet Gear) is very comfortable and high enough where they can see out the window if they want to. My girls love car rides once we get going.
We've done a few major road trips with the girls. The first was from Michigan to Myrtle Beach (about 14 hours each way), the second was from Michigan to Kansas City (about 13 hours each way), and this year we will go from Michigan to Alexandria (about 11 hours each way, through we will stop in Cleveland).
We didn't really stop any more frequently than we would have for me to go to the bathroom. We primarily used rest areas so the girls could roam on their leashes. We packed tons of food and water for snacking along the way, treats for the girls and chew sticks as well. They slept a good part of the trip and were very good for each and every one.
