Well, it depends on your dog. In my case, my dog LOVES the car. When I open the door he hops right in and lays down on the floor. Eventually I give in and let him up on my lap. I just don't want him to have bad manners haha, so he goes up when I want him up. Once we were about to leave but I had to run in to get something and he wouldn't get out of the car. I left the door to my house open just in case he wanted to follow, but he just stayed there. I come back and he is in the same position like,"can we go now??" It was too cute. Don't worry he stays in our yard in case he did jump out.
Anyways so, if he is used to the car it should be fine. Just take breaks ever 2 hours or so. That way he can go to the bathroom and drink. If he is used to traveling in a crate then just do whatever he is used to. I wouldn't worry too much. We're driving to Oregon which I think is a 7 hour+ drive and I'm not worried at all. My little guy is going to love it!
