I lived bi-coastal for 4 years (NJ and CA) and took my Silky with me every 6 weeks. I would recommend that you put the carrier our a few days before you go and let the pup get used to it. Put treats in it. Leave it open so they can go in and out, but then try zipping up and leaving them in for a few minutes at a time. My pup loved it so much that as soon as I pulled it out he would jump in it and wait. I also would bring extra treats to give to him during the flight and would get ice chips from the attendants.
Good luck.
Oh, P.S. when you are going through security, you remove the dog from the carrier - take off his collar and leash - and hand carry him throught the screening. His carrier will go through the x-ray machine. The TSA people told me that more than one person has put the carrier through with the dog in it!!
