While I don't think people should breed for them because they are too many pets available, and you cannot predict the results when you are mixing breeds, I do think they can make great pets. I happen to love both the Shih Tzu, and the Yorkie, and think a cross would be a fine dog. Concerning health, every dog born gets half its genes from one parent and the other half from the other parent, so it really depends on whether the parents were healthy, not if their genes were Yorkie or Shih Tzu.
