Go to Petsmart and get one of the bamboo combs with rotating pins, they work out the mats without ripping too much hair out. My boss raises yorkies and this is what we use when grooming them--brushes don't work very well to get the under coat, IMO-they miss the small mats which turn into big, nasty mats in a few days. I also use detangling spray for kids/or leave in conditioner spray, also start at the back end and work your way front--that way you aren't combing the mats in harder. I will generally hold a hand full of hair and pull a few strands out at a time, that way you are working out mats a little at a time. Good luck--work with your baby and they will tolerate grooming well. My girls see me pull out there grooming bag and run,lol-they lay nicely to comb when I get them--but you can tell they aren't happy, heee, heee.
