You're right about the dangers of a separated placenta. I don't think a mucus plug would be mistaken for a separated placenta in person but could be by a limited general description. The OP did call her vet and, I presume, gave a more detailed description than the one here. It would seem the vet concluded it was the mucus plug.

I don't think we have different opinions but more so that we read the description and drew different conclusions based on limited info. I did offer a link that gives a good run-down on what to look for in possible complications since I wasn't really sure based on the OP's post.
