Protein is essential for dogs. Amino acids(the building blocks of proteins) are either manufactured by the body, or must be found in the diet.
Those that must be found in our diet are called the essential amino acids. A complete protein is one that contains all the essential amino acids.
ALL animal proteins are complete proteins.
In order to derive a complete protein from plants, they must be eaten in specific combinations ; such as beans and nuts, beans and certain grains like quinoa, or split peas and whole grain breads.
It can be done but there are ramifications of not getting the correct balance. Issues with their skin, nails, hair, as well as effects on their immune system. Not to mention that the carbohydrate increase may cause significant weight gain. Extra protein is flushed through the body by way of the kidneys, however, extra carbohydrates are converted into fat and stored.
Why take a chance?
Feed them what they need.
