 Someone gave me this hint a few years ago, and it works!
When putting your babies into and removing them from the expen ALWAYS use the door. If you never put them in/out over the top, they don't see that as a means of escape.
LOL, Bernie climbs baby gates all the time. So...we were told this before getting the expen and it has worked wonders! Also, when hubby built a freestanding wooden gate for the foyer awhile ago, he built it with a door. LOL, they haven't figured out they can climb it either.
