I always thought 8 weeks too. 8 weeks old is generally the age that you get larger breed dogs. Smaller breeds should stay until 12 weeks old, especially the tinier ones. There was a really good explanation why somewhere on this board but I'm not sure where it is.

I know there's big differences between an 8 week old Golden Retriever and an 8 week old Yorkshire Terrier.
