I've been to 2 puppy classes over the years. We were always told to keep our dogs in their own space on leash & not in direct contact each other. Self control is part of the learning.
There should never be any dog at the bottom of the pile in a class. Both classes I attended had mixed sizes & went very well. You sign up for training not a play date, right? Yes, puppies need to learn to play with other dogs, but I don't think puppy classes are the place to do that when there are so many other things to learn.
I know you cancelled the class, but the fact that it turned out the way it did, you are better off. All trainers have different approaches, but when classes usually only last an hour or less, manners would be more important to learn than playing in my book.
