Just like vets, medical doctors get little training in nutrition. If you speak with a true nutritionist (master's level dietician) you will learn all about proper nutrition and food intake.

I just had a really great session with such a nutritionist who suggested that for optimal health everyone should be using a whole food supplement, a probiotic, digestive enzymes prior to all meals and a quality cold pressed fish oil along with a healthy diet rich in whole grains, 5-7 servings of vegetables, 3-5 fruits with minimal lean protein from meat/fish sources and avoiding "white foods" such as sugar, flour and white rice.
