Anther thing to do is find out what the reason for the barking was is the first place! He was barking because he needed to go potty? was he hungry? bored? did not want to be placed in his pen? With my Suzi , she always barks for a reason. Not to just be noisy. If you tend to the needs of the pup , then I find that the dog calms down much faster then trying to stop the behavior in a negative way . I would also suggest using positive reinforcement . If you respond in a "excited" alarming way, then your pup is only going to become more alarmed and bark more. OR he is going to become very fearful.
