I am so very sorry for your loss. We all just care about our pets so much and we are here as support and guidance for other pet owners as well.
I do not have an AAI/AAS baby, but I do know a good deal about the disease. I know this from Val and Babybear, as she was one of the first few here on YT with an AAI baby. She has been thru so much and seen the worst of the worst of this disease with Babybear. He was paralyzed for a LONG time, and most would have given up from the start. But she continued on and now helps other AAI babies, like Vicki's Bleu Boy.
I know that you were given a 50-50 chance of successful surgery with Pete and I can tell you struggled with which route to go. Pete did have a life threaten disease, a very scarey life threatening disease. I have to be honest and say, that I do not know if I could have lived every day worrying if this was going to be the last, bc without going for the surgery, he was really very luck each day for not breaking his neck and either being paralyzed or passing away immediately. I know you love him very much and this would have been beyond heartbreaking for you if and when that happened.
I wish I could take your pain away and in time you will start to heal. Pete knows how much you love him and how you just wanted to make him better.
And in time, I hope you will be able to open your heart and your home to another little fella. As a matter of fact, there is a scared little boy in a GA (kill shelter - they only hold for 5 days and then PTS). I will post the link here in case you wanted to see

Again, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you stay around here, we will be here for you
