If I intend to breed a female I always count from the 1st day I see blood, not from when I see swelling. Since some females keep themselves very clean or bleed lightly it might be easy to miss by a day or two. For those reasons I like to introduce the male and female around the 9th day of the heat cycle. I also go by what other signs the female is showing, like tail flagging or if the bleeding has stopped or turned light pink.
