As a groomer I have dealt with all types...but I rarely see the old type wool. Those coats were not different then lamb's wool and all I could do for the pet owner was shave them down...and that meant face included. I have seen the coat come off in one piece, no different then shearing a lamb.

I do see a softer and cottony type in the Yorkies here in Florida..as to the ring, you see soft, but not like 20 yrs ago.
