I have the same problem, but I saw my friend doing this for her poodle and it works every time.

I put the pill in his this mouth, wrap my hand around his mouth gently. Then I blow into his nose through the opening (looks like the little tunnel you make for warming your hands up) One quick blow and he swallows it. Takes about 30 seconds.
