Animal Smiley 019 Broken Claw

Hi!
My little Max is suffering from a broken claw, which is actually turned sideways. I took him to the vet, and they clipped it as short as they could go (torturous experience for him since he didn't want ANYONE touching the toenail) and his actual toe is fine, its just the claw casing that is cracked. So, my question is, he is constantly licking that foot, is there any kind of pain killer that anyone has tried to use to stop the probable itchyness/pain possibly? Note, he isn't bleeding and he still runs around like crazy, but I think every once in a while he bangs it, and then it hurts.
I was thinking of trying Baby Anbesol... since its supposed to stop the pain of teething in babies.. might work..but I need to research more into the effects on dogs. (He's 6 years old). Thanks!!!
