The choking on food was just a freak accident and not your fault.
It is a good lesson for all to remember to keep your comings and goings very low key. It greatly reduces the chance of your pup developing separation anxiety issues. Simple "Hi, how was your day?" and "See you later" without a lot of fuss make for happier dogs.
