Males can sense when a bitch is coming into heat before they start bleeding. Your female's vulva will swell before the bleeding begins. You may notice that her nipples become more prominent as well. Some small dogs really don't bleed much at all, so you may not notice when she starts bleeding unless you take some white toilet tissue and dab her down there. Make sure you go to great lengths to keep them separated! They must not even be allowed to play together. In fact, if you could let him stay with a relative or friend, that might be best. A pregnancy at this age would be extrememly devestating.
