Penny came from a BYB-turned-animal hoarder. It was a really sad situation; the lady thought she had only seven dogs. She was very elderly and suffering from dementia. She fell and broke her hip, and the truth was revealed when she called the animal hospital where I was working and asked if we could go and get her dogs out of the house for her since she was in the hospital and could not go home to care for them. There were thirty dogs running around her house, many of whom were sickly or injured and all of whom were filthy. There was so much excrement around that it was a serious health hazard to the old woman as well as her animals.

I feel very grateful that Penny has been healthy so far-- several of the other dogs were not that lucky. She does have some potty-in-the-house issues to this day which I think may have a root in the fact that she spent her prime house-training months running around in a home where no one cared if she went wherever she pleased.
