When my kids were small, I used to love decorating cakes for them! They started out pretty simple with the formed cake pans or a flat sheet cake with things like a football field decorated on top of it with plastic football players perched on top. As I got better and/or more creative, I moved up to tracing pictures of my kids' favorite characters onto the iced cake and then used thin icing to "paint" the pictures. I did pics from Beauty & the Beast, 101 Dalmations, Ninja Turtles, Where's Waldo, Minnie Mouse, Elmo,.....to name just a few.
They were in no way professional, but they did turn out well if I do say so myself. People told me to do it semi-professionally, but as my kids got older and the more I did, it was just too much work to do it for anything other than fun for my kids. I did a few for my grand-daughter also, but have since retired from cake decorating. It's so much easier to buy one from the store.
