I'd never heard of this before so did some looking around. Apparently, a dead puppy in utero can have several outcomes.

1. The bitch may completely re-absorb the pup.

2. She may partially re-absorb the pup...in which case she would expel the remains.

3. The pup may start to de-compose inside her which could be toxic to her and the other pups.

4. She could carry it full term. The possible problem with this is that a dead pup can't move to provoke contractions. This could lead to her being unable to deliver it or any pups behind the dead one.

After reading about this, I'm surprised your vet didn't go over these risks with you. Your dam should be closely monitored throughout the remaining pregnancy and could well need a c-section come whelping time.

As for the shaking, it may or may not be directly related to the dead pup. It could be hypocalcemia, which is not common, but not unheard of, in a pregnant bitch. Shaking and panting are also signs of pain and not just labor.

Since you've only had her a short while, you probably don't really know her overall health status. What kind of diet was she on before you got her and what is she eating now?

I would be very concerned for her and her pups until they're safely whelped. If your vet can't help you in addressing these concerns, I'd find a more attentive vet.

Best of luck to you and your girl.
