A moot point now that you've cut his hair...but in the future do not bath a dog until he is brushed out completely. Mats are almost impossible to remove once they've gotten wet. The detanglers work well...and try to seperate the mat into three sections and then comb out. If the mat is bad enough...don't cut it out...cut into the mat and then comb.

I own two with soft coats and yes, they require brushing/combing every day cause if not...they are walking mat balls.
