You shouldn't use the bow to make the topknot. You make a topknot first with bands, then use the bands on the bow for placement over the topknot. They come off and on easily that way.
The band removal scissors are used to cut the bands that are used to make the topknot. They have a hook on the end so they snag the band so you can pull it away for the hair before cutting.
If you keep your bows safe and dust free in a box, they should last for years. If a band does break, it's easy to replace it. I will even do it for you no charge.
