Default Any Good Products For Tarter?

At Brody's check-up yesterday the vet said he was getting some tarter on his back teeth and gave me some samples of doggie toothpaste and a finger brush . . .he explained to me how to go about doing it . . .Soooo, I TRIED to follow his advice and get a smidgen of the doggie paste on Brody's gums in the back and rub it with my finger . . .HA! He clamped down and wouldn't even let me try . . .I then did the same with Rhianna and she didn't care one bit . . .I was even able to use the finger brush on her . . .but she's not the one with the tarter . . .

I bought this liquid from PETCO called Dental Fresh a while back and have been using it (not daily as I should) in their water dish . . .apparently Brody still needs a bit more help in that area . . .

Any recommendations for how to go about cleaning his teeth? He's only 2 1/2 and I would love to prevent him from having to get his teeth surgically cleaned . . .
