My Rita is six years also, but I got her (rehomed) only 1 month ago. She did this to me when I first got her. She was used to eating once a day. I took her normal amount of what she would have in the morning and divided it in 1/2. She gets half in the morning at 8 am and the other half @ 6pm. It seems to work well, she doesn't wake me up anymore! Good luck!
