I would NOT try this. They can't kick you off mid-flight, but they certainly can flag you as a passenger and make future travel extremely difficult. There are flight attendants who will tell you the bag has to stay under the seat, but it really isn't any different than taking something out of the overhead bin. As long as you don't push the limits, you should be just fine.
