Can your MIL stay all day then go home to sleep at night or even spend the week there? I have always sent my lab to a relatives or taken him with me, he has never been crated can't imagine him in a crate. I am lucky to have relatives who keep my brats. I took my lab to Georgia for a vacation for 5 days and he was excellent, he loved the adventure. Good luck and if all else fails I guess you can cancel vacation until you can afford to board or find a dog sitter to spend the time at your home.
