is he chewing on the crate while you are gone?? or at night??? he is chewing for one of 2 reasons a) he is bored - which could easily be remedied by a walk before being crated- a tired dog is a well behaved dog. If you don't have time for a "long" walk- you can buy those little back packs for dogs at petsmart- put something small in the pockets- maybe one of those teeny cans of tomato juice- and take him for a 20 min walk. This will equal a longer walk and wear him out. b) separation anxiety.
