I have not been 100% happy with my whelping box set up as I am afraid the babies will get chilled. I was going to go to the stor and get her a storage container so they won't get draft but ow am not sure if I should move everything. What do you all think. I know the way it is I will have a challange keeping the babies warm. |
Do you have a puppy heating pad? The best thing is to get a heating pad that will not shut off. You want the heating pad to just cover just half of the whelping box. Even without a heating pad the puppies should do okay since it is not winter time. The first 8 years that I bred yorkies I never had a heating pad but I just kept the room temperature a little warmer. The main thing it to not keep it too hot because if momma gets hot that will reduce her milk production. Just some nice warm bedding will be good if you don't have a heating pad. I like to you a flannel sheet in the beginning for my babies. For whelping I use the people bed pads they sell at Wal-mart. They work great for absorbing all the fluids from the birthing.
