Westie jealous of new Yorkie As you remember, I got my new Yorkie Wednesday. I named her Jasmine, or Jassy for short. She is so precious. My husband wasn't too sure he wanted another dog. We have a Westie who is 6 months old. I really wanted this puppy and since I usually get my way, we got the Yorkie. Well, she already has him wrapped around her little paw. He really likes her. Our Westie, Duffy, however, is not so sure. He likes her and won't leave her alone, but he is also jealous.
Duffy is so much bigger than her and I was afraid he might hurt her. He is also a very high energy dog and very rowdy. He is VERY intelligent. I swear he knows everything we say and it isn't just the inflection in our voice like some people say. He is just so rowdy, very headstrong, NEVER still a minute. Sometimes he just tires you out. He will not ever just sit on your lap, but we love him dearly and wouldn't change a thing about him. We joke that we should have names him Taz (for the Tasmanian Devil)
When I took her home Wednesday evening, I put him on a leash and held on to him so he could be meet her but not hurt her if he got rowdy. Well, as I said, he won't leave her alone, he acts as if he likes her, but is very possessive about what is his. He doesn't want her to get any of his toys. He has them all over the house and everytime she gets one, he can't stand it and tries to take it away from her. She is a little feistier than I thought. She will stand right up to him and growl and hang on to the toy.
I will make him lay down beside me but then she will come over and jump on his head and nip at his nose and want to wrestle. He is so much bigger though, I am afraid he will hurt her unintentionally.
I have had a problem the last 2 nights. He has been housebroken for quite some time and hasn't messed in the house for weeks and weeks. The last 2 nights, he has pooped in the house, practically right in front of us. Is this because of his jealousy? I guess I am going to have some issues to deal with. Anyone else have these problems when introducing a second dog into the family?
Anyway, Jasmine is settling right in to her new family. She is very loving. Didn't cry at all the last 2 nights. Probably because she was sleeping with her mommy (me). She's eating good and seems to like having the run of the house.
I hated to come to work today and leave her, but my 13 yr old granddaughter and her friend spent the night last night because they didn't have school today and they wanted to play with the dogs. Tori (my granddaughter) is getting a Yorkie Nov. 8. The lady I bought Jasmine from will have another litter ready then. She has wanted one for 2 years and her parents finally said they thought she was old enough and responsible enough to take care of one. She can't wait. |
