I have a year old male who still has to go out often, at least during the day. He is both inside and outside trained, but he prefers to go outside because he loves to sniff around. I have never reprimanded him when he makes a mistake, only praised him when he has done good. I know when he makes a mistake, in my eyes, not his, that it is my fault for not paying more attention to what he is trying to tell me. He will usually scratch on the door when he has to go out, but if I don't take him out right away, he will go and use his papers.
