Don't forget many of those e-mails you get are from puppy brokers; they get breeders names and email addresses from various sources, and are looking for free/cheap dogs for resale. I think, perhaps, you need to just send them an application, and have them fill out a paper giving references, including vet references, and work references. Ask questions about how long they have been living in the same address, and if they have a fenced yard. Inquire about any children they have living with them and the ages. Ask about other pets, and if they've ever needed to rehome. There are many sample pet adoption papers you can use, but this will help you weed out serious inquires only, and it's not rude to tell someone you can't afford to sell your dogs for that amount. A breeder shouldn't be expected to lose money. A good breeder will refuse to sell to certain people even if they can meet your price.
