Start w/ basics...sit first, once they get that work on laying down, come to you and back. Most important keep commands simple and different from 1 another. If you choose to teach them "Lay Down" use a different command for "Stay" since stay and lay sound too similar. We teach "Down" and "Wait" to our dogs. "Back" is useful also, especially if you have a dog that likes to barge out the door when you open it. My now babies know basics and some special commands such as "Mind your Manners" when a guest comes over, they will get down off the couch and down/out of their faces until invited. I have taught my pets in the past w/ silent commands. This is easily done by incorporating a hand signal with your verbal commands, eventually they will get it.
Just give lots of praise and work 10 min or so a night and your furbaby will get it, they are eager to please. In no time you'll be reaping the rewards of having a well mannered furbaby.
