You did a wonderful thing but I know exactly how you feel. I got Sugar at 18 months so he was full grown. I always tell him, I bet you were the cutest puppy in the whole world! I wish I at least had pictures. I feel so sad that I missed out on that but I know I'm lucky to have him now.
