From the website I seen that there is a drainage grid under the grass, you line the bottom of the pan with newspapers to absorb the urine. You can machine wash the grass, they show to wash it inside a pillowcase. I'm certain that even if it needs to be replaced at some point it would work out to be less expensive then pee pads
