Last year, I had the same experience with Murphy getting out of his harness and heading for a 4 lane highway. I researched harnesses and found the Buddy Belt. It is a step in harness, has a buckle, and is made of leather. It is somewhat expensive, but will last forever. It never needs to be adjusted.
Murphy has been wearing his harness for over a year and it still looks like new. I will never put another harness with velcro ever again. It fact he will always wear a Buddy Belt.
