We had bought her in the prospect of at least getting one litter from her (so we could keep her puppies as she grew older) but then that was shot as well when she became VERY ill and we almost lost her at 4 years old. She had to have her whole uterus out. After MANY drs visits... more then one operations... LOTS of dr bills (we loved her so much) it was just more of a headache and now we are a little cautious spending even 2k for a puppy (reputable breeder or not)
SO! I dunno what the answer is... |
It's not easy finding a truly reputable breeder, and just because others say they are reputable doesn't make it so. If the AKC pulled her from the list, she was really doing something majorly wrong. You need to thoroughly check out a breeder before making this major commitment. It's great to know the AKC does pull those breeders who are truly horrendous, but just having AKC credentials mean very little. I can't tell you how many times I've read someone recommending a certain breeder, and all they have from the breeder is a 6-month-old puppy. How could you recommend on that? How would you have any idea if the breeder was really good until much much later.
I think what many don't understand when they purchase a puppy is that they will grow to love this puppy more than they ever thought possible, and even if you can afford the bills, seeing a little one go through all the surgeries and treatment is heartbreaking.
