If you counted placenta's after each birth, and know for certain there could not be a retained placenta...then the shot is really not necessary. However, if a placenta breaks off..or you missed the birth of a pup..and cannot be certain if every placenta passed...then yes...she needs a clean out shot to prevent infection. The shot is useful in cleaning out the uterus...and aiding in the "let down" of the milk. It certainly would not hurt...and can save the life of the bitch.
