Default When is flea/tick prevention necessary??

We live in the city so I didn't really consider getting a flea/tick collar, or a spray-on of the sort. But now that it's summer we often go to my parents' house on the weekends, and they live in the suburbs so my doggies are walking around a lot on lawns, going to parks more often, etc.

Is it necessary to use some sort of flea/tick prevention method for the season? If so, what are the best kinds? I've read a lot of bad stuff about certain over the counter pesticides bc of their adverse effects on dogs, so I want to make sure I'm not harming them unnecessarily.
