Well i think you may hear that Yorkies are sick more often because they are in high demand right now and many "breeders" are not responsible when they breed and their pups end up sick. If you buy your dog from a reputable breeder they will be no more prone to problems than any other dogs. Labs have hips, Cockers have eyes and skin- every dog has their issues and even if you DO get from a reputable breeder- they still may have some issues- Layla came from a great breeder and she has pancreatitis- nothing to do with breeding- just luck of the draw. Do your research and buy from good breeder who does genetic testing.
