The anti biotic isn't really to treat the cough. It's a preventative against pneumonia. The cough can linger quite awhile. You can use a warm mist vaporizer with vick's in it...or take them into a steamed filled bathroom and that helps a great deal. A teaspoon of honey soothes irritated throats too.
