Welcome to YT and to the wonderful world of Yorkies! I am not a good one to give advice on crates as the only time we use ours is taking them to the vet. I have let the crate stay open and sometimes one of the puppies goes in there to take a nap, but I don't close the door. Mine spend most of the day running around or curling up with me in my chaise. When I leave or when I need to do something where I can't be watching them close, I put them in their playyard. (It is one of those plastic fence-like things sold for children). They have toys, a bed, pee pads, and food & water in there -- but they still prefer to be out with me. So, I let them as much as I can. My pup are 12 1/2 weeks old. Yorkies are VERY social dogs. They like to be with their people.
