When I was living in my apartment:

It was all trial and error with my pup. I put her in the kitchen first with a gate, food, water, toys, a pee pad and a blanket, but she kept knocking the gate down. Then I tried putting the gate up with phone books propped up on the other side, and I also put a chair up next to it. That worked for two days; then she managed to knock it down. The problem with my pup is she's quite nosy and will get into everything. Plus, she tries to eat everything. So I would come home to the gate knocked over, paper eaten and littered everywhere and everything knocked down. Very unsafe for the little one.

So then I put her in the bathroom with water, food, toys, a blanket and a pee pad. That worked for one day. The second day she unrolled all the toilet paper, so I made sure she couldn't access it the third day. On the third day, she got behind the dryer and completely obliterated the silver accordion thing that attaches the dryer to the wall.

So I crated her after that and after only two days of messes, she did great!
After a month of one that fit her pretty perfectly (like they tell you to get so she doesn't go to the bathroom in one corner and then hide in the other), I bought a bigger wire grate one that she could move around in and put nice, big padding in there for her with some of her toys. I have one of those water things that is attached to the gate that you lick the metal part and water comes out. Does that make sense? It's what you give rabbits and hamsters except way bigger. She likes the big crate so much better, but you really have to make sure there won't be any accidents first.

While I didn't enjoy the idea of crating, I didn't really have any other option and she seems fine. She sits there patiently and doesn't whine or anything. She only whines if she knows I'm still home.

While I still crate her in a home, I'm around a lot more. When I was working long hours, I would make an effort to come home and hang out with her for thirty minutes. (I lived less than five minutes away when I lived in the apartment)

Wow. That was probably a lot more than you wanted to know!
